Circa 2003:  The Diode Lamp is a working prototype built for a lighting design competition.  The design brief was to find a solution to poor lighting for web cams (“videoconferencing”) .  My final design utilized low-cost LED modules from another consumer lighting product to provide additional lighting.  The lamp can be powered by the typical outlet adaptor, or USB.  The design didn’t fare well in the competition, but it is still in use as a reading lamp.

Aluminum studio chair

Circa 2003:  I think this was my first shot at furniture design – definately the first aluminum chair!  Project design brief stated that we had to build a functional seat from one sheet of aluminum that would work with the 42″ tall studio desks, and it had to have “more than one function.”  I went for some adjustment so that I could use the chair later, and chose storage space below as the secondary function.  The shape is heavily influenced by racing seats and sheetmetal monocoque race car chassis’, complete with exposed bolts, rivets, and adjustment linkage.   The height and seat pitch adjustment is rather limited with the turnbuckles; a more easily adjusted linkage could be made, but the development budget was small!
